A 2nd year of projects update #1 Sock Megalomania

Well, here it is. My first sock ever.

Knitting it was so much fun, I couldn't resist trying it on all the time.

There is only one problem....this sock is waaaay to big for me. I have a shoe size 40/41 (size 7.5/8 in the USA), but my feet are very slim. The pattern I used stated to cast on 64 stitches for my size, but since my feet are slimmer than normal feet I cast on 60 stitches. Still the sock turned out way too wide, my gauge was a little bit bigger so I might have to use smaller needles.

Anyone else ever made socks that were too big?

I think I will let this project rest until I know what to do. Make a new pair or finish another sock this side and donate them to my boyfriend (he is not a big fan of purple though ;-)).

You might have already seen the baby booties that I finished and I also started another project on the list. A little sneak peek:

Take a look at the Ravelry group page for some more updates!

  1. I have yet to try socks but I think yours turned out great even if they are a tad big :) Looking forward to seeing your mystery bead project, the beads are neat looking!

  2. Lovely sock. Pity it's too big. I would keep it for when I wear tights and this would fit perfectly over them then. For those really cold days

  3. Congrats on your first sock! I always have problems with socks (guage issues).
So I only knit socks toe up so I can try them on and make adjustments as I go.

  4. Suzanne...I have 4 months left to come up with woollen socks for my boys...which pattern did you use? This is going to be an epic challenge for me :-D

  5. Love your sock and maybe keep it for when its really cold so you can slip it on over another pair. Well done on getting it complete. Cute beads on your next project.

  6. I just finished a pair of socks that were too big for me and gave them to my hubby. If you go down one needle size you should be ok with your next pair. That's all I did and it worked will.

No one will see the socks once they are in shoes and under long pants. My hubby would wear them. LOL

  8. I love your sock the colour is gorgeous. My socks cam out a little bit too big when I first started. They make perfect slouchy socks for when you're having a PJ day.

Once you've adjusted with either less stitches or smaller needles then you'll be laughing. welcome to the addiction that is sock knitting LOL :)

  10. Loving your new socks, even if it is a bit big, I wouldn't be tempted to tuck it away until you've mad the second one, if you are anything like me, you will put it down and then find it soooo hard to restart.....do another while it's fresh in your mind I say.

Love the beads, they look like pineapple chunks!

  11. Sorry the first pair don't fit. They're sure to fit someone else. Socks usually have about 10% negative ease so you can now calculate what your primary stitch count should be. I'm keen on 72 sts on size ) needles - but that's just 'cause Nancy Bush says so!

  12. Congrats on completing your first socks....stick with it and make the other one..then give them as a chrismtas gift ...to someone with a larger foot...

I don't know what needles you used...but I always make my socks on size 1....

    Your new project looks interesting....

  14. The yarn seems yummu and yes of course, we all knit one time a sock really too big, I have done two. The joke was: Is it to put after the shoes... really too big!

  15. Great first sock! Can you use it over another pair inside winter boots/wellies? Or just find a fat-footed friend?? :)

  16. COngratulations on your first sock! Size is a technicality :) It's having the techniques nailed that matters. I use 64 stitches with 2.5mm needles, my first pair were on 2.75mm needles and are a little on the loose side.

Love the beading, and adore your blog header pics :)

  17. I love the square beads! Congrats on the first sock - I hope you can find a solution for your slim feet though :)

  18. Lovely sock! My first few pairs were also a bit big for me. Now I CO 56 stitches with 2.5mm needles - it's actually quite easy to adapt the length of the foot.

  19. No help on the socks, afraid it's still something on my list to learn to do. I always love seeing pictures of people trying on partially done socks....particularly when they have pretty toes to go with it, lol. Good luck if you frog and redo.........or perhaps they'll fit someone else and you'll start a different pair for yourself?

  20. Love your sock, wonderful colour! It is so sad that it is not fitting. I wish I could help you with it, but I´ve never made knitted socks before.
Lovely pearls, I can´t wait to see that project finished. :)
Have a great new week! Barbina

  21. The sock is so lovely. What a shame it doesn't fit. Perhaps you have a purple loving friend with wider feet? :)

  25. Sometimes a trip through the wash cycle will help to snug up socks a bit. I tend to ignore the actual washing instructions on the yarn and just toss all of 'em into a bag and into the washer. They get hung up to dry and with only one or 2 exceptions, shrinkage has been very minimal and often improves the overall fit.

  26. Heh, at least too big is better than too small! Bed socks, maybe?

Whatever you're making with those beads looks amazing - so much patience! Look forward to seeing it finished :)

  27. Well since I have resisted sock knitting so far, I have no helpful solutions for you. I do however like your yarn! I looked up your baby bootie post and am in love with them--maybe my daughter will have baby #3 this year?
